New trailers: Killing Eve, Upload, Murder House Flip, and more
I’d completely expected to be writing a note this week about how the COVID-19 pandemic has largely shut down trailer production, but it turns out, my assumption was wrong. While things have certainly slowed down, streaming services are almost singlehandedly keeping up the new releases. If anything, this is a great moment for them to debut a new show or series since everyone is stuck indoors.
That said, we’ll see how long this lasts. Productions are being shut down for health reasons, and it seems like every major movie coming out in the next couple of months is being delayed. So there may come a point where the backlog of content thins out. I certainly suspect it’ll be a bit before we see any trailers for tentpole films.
For now, it’s a great moment to catch up on some old movies you haven’t watched in a while or check out a show you never got around to. My wife and I are now nearly a season into The Sopranos, something we newly have the time to spend watching through. Other than the occasionally strange ’90s music choices, it’s pretty good.
Check out 11 trailers from this week and last week below.
KILLING EVE
While I’ve heard that the show’s second season didn’t live up to its much-loved first run, this teaser for season three of Killing Eve looks wonderfully stylized, fun, and dramatic. The show returns April 12th.
# BLACKAF
Black-ish creator Kenya Barris has a new comedy series coming to Netflix about life as a successful black artist in Hollywood. Barris stars as a fictionalized version of himself, with Rashida Jones playing his wife. From just the first moment of this trailer, it seems like the show is off to a strong start. It debuts April 17th.
TIGERTAIL
Master of None co-creator Alan Yang makes his feature debut with Tigertail, a beautifully shot film about a Taiwanese factory worker moving to America. It comes to Netflix on April 10th.
UPLOAD
Greg Daniels, who led the US version of The Office, is back with a new sitcom for Amazon. Upload is about people who live in a digital “afterlife” after having their consciousness uploaded pre-death. So far, it mostly looks like an excuse to make some pretty low-hanging tech jokes (hilarious, there are in-app purchases...). The show debuts May 1st.
THE GREAT
Hulu has a ridiculous looking period piece comedy coming up that stars Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great. It’s hard not to think of The Favourite while watching this, but that’s not a bad thing — the series comes from one of the film’s co-writers. The show debuts May 15th.
DEFENDING JACOB
Chris Evans plays a father whose kid is accused of murder in this upcoming Apple TV Plus series. It’s based on a crime novel, and yeah... I just went ahead and read the entire synopsis on Wikipedia to find out if he did it or not. The show debuts April 24th.
RUN
The basic premise of Run is super twee — two exes follow through on an old agreement to drop everything, reunite, and run away together if their lives get boring — but the actual execution looks surprisingly fun and lively. It comes out April 12th.
THE WILLOUGHBYS
Netflix is turning Lois Lowry’s The Willoughbys into an animated film, and while it looks like the movie is filled with pretty conventional kids humor, the animation has an intricate stop motion-esque look to it. It comes out April 22nd.
BAD EDUCATION
Even though Netflix has made straight-to-streaming films a totally normal thing, I’m still a little skeptical about movies that go straight to HBO. But all that said: I’m very into this trailer for Bad Education, which is based on a real story about a beloved school leader whose years of theft starts to become exposed. It comes out April 25th.
MOST DANGEROUS GAME
I’m fully obsessed with watching Quibi trailers in a “let’s see just how much of a mess this is gonna be” kind of way. Most Dangerous Game is a movie “in chapters” up to 10 minutes long. There are two big stars in the lead, and despite my assumptions, it looks like a pretty altogether normal action movie. It comes to Quibi on April 6th, when the service launches.
MURDER HOUSE FLIP
Speaking of Quibi... here’s the trailer for what is likely its altogether most bonkers show. I absolutely hate that this is probably going to be its biggest hit. via theverge

If the world weren’t on lockdown, I’d suggest you all go out to see First Cow, which just came out last weekend. It’s the latest movie from Kelly Reichardt, it’s a really great film. It can be loosely described as a heist movie about stealing milk from a cow, but it’s also about friendship, capitalism. One of the really neat things the movie does is spoil the ending right at the start of the film. I can’t remember seeing another movie do anything exactly like this. TV shows, like Breaking Bad, have often teased out climatic moments, but First Cow telegraphs where it’s going in a way that actually amplifies the tension. You know a certain event is coming. The questions are when and how it’s going to happen. Since you probably aren’t going to the theaters anytime soon, I’ll just point out that some other excellent films from Reichardt are available on popular streaming platforms. Night Moves, a thriller about eco-terrorism, is on Amazon, and Meek’s Cutoff, which is about a band of settlers lost in the desert, is on Amazon and Hulu.

NEW YORK — The Walt Disney Co. will release “Frozen 2” on Disney Plus several months early to give families cooped up by the coronavirus a welcome distraction — and give its streaming service a boost. Disney will now release Frozen 2 this coming Sunday, March 15 on Disney Plus in the US. In Australia, you'll be able to watch it on Tuesday March 17. Grab a free Disney Plus trial here if you haven't given the service a go yet.
Most upcoming new releases have been postponed due to the virus, including Disney's own lineup. “Mulan” had been set to hit theaters next week. Few March or April movies remain on the calendar. Some movie theaters have shuttered, though most are currently imposing new restrictions on audience crowding to help facilitate the social distancing recommended by health officials. The move by Disney could presage how other media companies funnel their films to streaming services in the coming weeks as studios look for ways to capitalize on audiences stuck at home. And it could prove a pivotal moment in the evolution of streaming services in relation to theatrical release. The major studios have largely guarded the traditional three-month exclusive theatrical window. Frozen 2 will likely be a massive draw for the streaming service: it was the third highest-grossing film of 2019 at $1.449 billion, only behind two other Disney films, Avengers: Endgame and The Lion King. Frozen 2 was released on digital home video on February 25 – so the waiting time for it to land on Disney Plus is almost exactly four months. The vast majority of people recover from the new virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover.
The groundbreaking 1988 science fiction film Akira is getting a 4K remaster next year, and director Katsuhiro Otomo has announced a new anime series based on his original Akira manga as well as an unrelated new feature film called Orbital Era.
Anime News Network reported the news out of the Anime Expo yesterday, and studio Sunrise has released a couple of short, related teaser trailers. The Akira 4K remaster will launch in Japan on April 24th, 2020, and it’s coming to the US at an unknown point. Akira was previously restored for DVD in 2001 and Blu-ray in 2009.
Sunrise president Makoto Asanuma said the studio was
“still developing” the new anime series, but it’s apparently supposed to
incorporate the events of the entire manga, which was published from
1982 to 1990. “Fans will be kept up to date about this new anime
adaptation project as details become available,” reads a Facebook post by the company.
The Akira film substantially condensed the manga’s story, and, as Gizmodo pointed out, Otomo initially felt his adaptation was a failure
because of its major time and budget constraints. In fact, the widely
beloved film helped introduce Japanese animation to Western audiences,
and it’s soon getting a live-action adaptation from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. That film will premiere on May 21st, 2021.
Orbital Era is written, directed, and designed by Otomo. It will be his third feature-length animated film, following Akira and the 2004 film Steamboy. Here’s the description from Sunrise:
The plot takes place in the near-future on a
space colony under construction. It is an action-adventure story
following the lives of some young boys surviving in this peculiar
environment and society as they are tossed around by fate. “The reality
found in mankind’s future” will be depicted through their perspective.
A 44-second teaser trailer shows an astronaut with Soviet
Union insignia carrying a skateboard, although Otomo noted that the
main character is apparently American. Anime News Network writes that it’s supposed to be more fantastical than strictly hard sci-fi.
Otomo is also editing a retrospective called Otomo: The Complete Works,
which is supposed to “include every one of his works and statements in
chronological order since his debut as a manga artist in 1971.” That’s a
tall order: while Otomo is best known for Akira, he’s got a vast body of work. We covered an expansive exhibit of his art
back in 2012. “Otomo will personally edit and organize the
retrospective with the goal of publishing a fresh collection of work
through which fans can trace the trajectory of his ideas and creations
as far back as the birth of his creative career,” reads the description
from Sunrise.
