Italy loses control of Coronavirus

Italy has recorded 427 new deaths in 24 hours, bringing the number of deaths in the country since the coronavirus epidemic began to 3,405, according to a new toll released Thursday by the Civil Protection Agency.

With this death toll, Italy surpasses China, where the virus appeared three months ago and has recorded 3,249 deaths to date.

At a press conference in Rome, The Head of the Italian Civil Protection Authority, Angelo Borelli, said the number of cases of the virus had reached 41,035. Borelli noted that Lombardy in the Milan region remains the hardest hit by the Coronavirus outbreak, with 2,168 deaths.

Of the total number of infected and without symptoms, 14,935 are in voluntary home quarantine, 15,757 are undergoing medical care in hospitals, and 2,498 are being treated in care center. Borelli said 4,440 of the injured have recovered.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced earlier thursday that the quarantine measures imposed in Italy, which recorded a record high number of victims of the Corona epidemic, "will be extended beyond the date", scheduled for April 3rd.

Conte said in a press statement that the measures taken by the Italian government, whether those related to the closure of a large part of the companies and the suspension of individual activities in the country or related to all schools and universities, will be extended beyond its date.

The Prime Minister added that when Italy reaches its peak, the number of infections will begin to decline. "We hope this will happen in a few days".

He called for "maximum awareness", stressing at the same time that severe criminal sanctions await those who do not respect quarantine procedures.
